In a Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2023 match between Brisbane Heat Women and Sydney Sixers Women at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane on Tuesday (November 21) an unusual incident unfolded, resulting in a five-run penalty for the Heats.

Unusual penalty in WBBL 2023 match: Brisbane Heat penalized five runs

The incident took place during the 10th over of Sixers’ run chase. Ashleigh Gardner, facing a delivery from Amelia Kerr, danced down the track and directed the ball to long-on. The fielder at long-on cleanly fielded the ball and threw it in the direction of Kerr, who was positioned near the stumps at the non-striker’s end. In an attempt to catch the throw, Kerr used a towel, which she was using to keep the ball dry due to the outfield’s dew. Umpire Joshua Adie deemed Kerr’s action a violation of law 28.2.1.2  and penalized Heat with five runs.

“A fielder will be deemed to have fielded the ball illegally if, while the ball is in play he/she wilfully extends his/her clothing with his/her hands and uses this to field the ball,” the law reads.
