In the Saturday’s double header in Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2023, Sydney Thunder Women faced off Perth Scorchers Women in the first game while Adelaide Strikers Women took on Sydney Sixers Women in the second clash.
Chamari Athapaththu guides Sydney Thunder to comfortable win
After being asked to bat, the Perth Scorchers Women posted a total of 116/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Sophie Devine contributed 15 runs off 18 balls, Beth Mooney added 26 runs off 19 balls, and Amy Jones provided a quick boost with 37 runs off 16 balls.
However, the Sydney Thunder bowlers, led by Chamari Athapaththu (2 wickets for 23 runs) and Lauren Smith (2 wickets for 12 runs), put up an impressive performance to restrict the Scorchers.
Chasing a target of 117, the Sydney Thunder Women dominated the run chase with authority. Athapaththu yet again played a magnificent innings, scoring 77 runs off 53 balls, including 10 fours and 3 sixes. Heather Knight (32 runs off 34 balls) provided valuable support as they reached the target in just 16.1 overs and secured a convincing victory by 9 wickets.

Tahlia McGrath steers Adelaide Strikers to impressive triumph
Put in to bat, the Sydney Sixers Women set a target of 123 for the Adelaide Strikers Women, posting a total of 122/8 in their 20 overs. Ellyse Perry was the top scorer for the Sixers, contributing 37 runs off 36 balls with 5 fours.
Chloe Tryon played a crucial innings, scoring 39 runs off 28 balls, including 5 fours and 1 six. However, the Strikers’ bowlers put up a commendable performance, with Danielle Gibson being the pick of the lot, taking 3 wickets for 34 runs in her 4 overs.
In response, the Adelaide Strikers Women successfully chased down the target, reaching 124/3 in 17.3 overs. Katie Mack led the charge with a solid knock of 45 runs off 37 balls, while Tahlia McGrath added valuable contributions with 38 runs off 35 balls, including 3 fours and 1 six. Before her batting heroics, McGrath had also bagged a couple of wickets to leave her all-round impact in the game.
The Sydney Sixers’ bowlers struggled to contain the Strikers, with Lauren Cheatle being the most successful, taking 1 wicket for 15 runs in her 3.3 overs. In the end, the Adelaide Strikers Women secured a convincing win by 7 wickets.
