Ben Duckett speaks out about England's disappointing World Cup 2023 run ahead of West Indies clash

England cricketer Ben Duckett has provided insights into team’s disappointing ODI World Cup 2023 journey ahead of the West Indies 2023 series.

England’s disappointing ODI World Cup 2023 campaign

Despite massive anticipation, England, led by Jos Buttler, fell short of expectations, failing to reach the semi-finals. The batting unit struggled collectively throughout the tournament, with Buttler’s form being particularly disappointing as he failed to register a half-century. In their last two league games against the Netherlands and Pakistan, the team showed some improvement. Nevertheless, with just three wins in nine matches, England have managed to secure a spot in the Champions Trophy 2025 scheduled in Pakistan.

Ben Duckett’s thoughts on England’s World Cup struggle

Following the World Cup, England are gearing up for the West Indies tour, featuring three ODIs and five T20Is. Duckett, part of both squads, also reflected on the challenges of witnessing England’s struggles in the prestigious event. The left-handed batter also emphasized that five weeks don’t define a team and asserts England’s magnificent performance in the T20 format over the last eight years.

“I watched every England game and it was tough to watch at times. I’m watching mates go out there and struggle. It was really difficult. I was playing with them a few weeks before, so it was tough. But we have watched how England have played over the past eight years and one bad five weeks does not define a team,” Duckett was quoted as saying by The Gaurdian.

Consistency and approach for West Indies series

He has expressed his commitment to maintaining the same successful approach against the West Indies, with the series commencing with the first ODI on Sunday, December 3.

“I don’t think there’s going to be a new approach because of how the World Cup went. If they won that World Cup, the same group of players might have been here. They had guys who were potentially in their late 30s and coming towards the end of their 50-over careers, so it seemed like there was always going to be a fresh start after it. We’re just a group of players who can go and showcase what we can do,” the 29-year-old concluded.
