Although the unexpected revelation by Green has sent shockwaves through the cricketing community, it also sheds light on the resilience and determination that has fueled his successful cricketing career despite the odds stacked against him from a very young age.

On the professional front

With an impressive international record of 55 matches and 1656 runs to his name, Green is a vital asset to the Australian cricket team. He’s currently part of Australia’s Test squad for the Pakistan series and was recently in the headlines for his INR 17.50 crore move from Mumbai Indians (MI) to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ahead of the IPL 2024 auction.

Cameron Green’s shocking revelation about chronic kidney disease

The unexpected revelation from Green about his health came to light in a poignant video shared by 7Cricket, featuring the cricketer himself and his parents reflecting on his health challenges.

In the clip, Green revealed that doctors diagnosed him with chronic kidney disease at birth through ultrasounds despite the absence of any visible symptoms.

“My parents got told when I was born, I had chronic Kidney disease. Basically there’s no symptoms. It just got picked up through ultrasounds,” revealed Green.

“So it was quite a shock”: Green’s mother reflect on the challenges

The Aussie all-rounder’s mother further shared the details of the initial diagnosis, explaining that a urethral valve blockage was detected during a 19-week scan, which led to the backflow of urine to the kidneys, hindering their proper development.

“I was at my 19-week scan and they picked up that he had. Thickening of his bladder and they said it was a urethral valve blockage, that the urine basically just backflows to the Kidneys and that they wouldn’t develop properly. So it was quite a shock,” Green’s mother recalled.

Moreover, Green’s father discussed the challenging period when their family faced an uncertain future as doctors warned them of life expectancy issues, suggesting that Green might not live beyond 12 years of age.

“At that time, it was uncharted territory as such. So the prognosis wasn’t great and there were life expectancy issues that might not expect to live past 12 years of age,” the Aussie cricketer’s father discussed.

Despite the grim prognosis, Green has defied the odds and is currently managing stage two chronic kidney disease. He disclosed that his kidneys are functioning at about 60 percent capacity, emphasizing the challenges associated with this health condition.

“Chronis Kidney disease is basically a disease of your kidneys health function. Unfortunately, my dosen’t filter the blood as well as other kidneys… So they’re about 60 percent at the moment, which is stage two,” the all-rounder highlighted.

Acknowledging his fortune in managing the disease relatively well, Green expressed gratitude for not being as physically affected as others facing a similar diagnosis. He credited his ability to cope to the support of his parents and the assistance of his dietitian partner, whom he’s dating.

“I consider myself very lucky that I’m not as affected physically by chronic kidney disease as other people that have the same thing. Luckily I’m dating a dietician someone who can help me out with my meals that I need to look after myself with,” Green emphasized.
