Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has opened up about his potential involvement in the upcoming Test series against South Africa. As India navigates the current multi-format tour in South Africa, featuring T20Is, ODIs, and culminating in the red-ball series, the uncertainties surrounding Shami’s fitness become a crucial factor. The Proteas’ formidable reputation in Test cricket on home turf adds significance to the discussions about key players’ availability.

South Africa’s dominant record at home

South Africa have maintained a dominant Test record against India on their home soil. Even during India’s peak performances on foreign grounds in recent years, South Africa had managed to thwart their efforts. In the previous tour under the leadership of Virat Kohli, India secured a 1-0 lead, but South Africa rallied back to claim the series 2-1.

Speaking to Aaj Tak, Shami , a key member of India’s Test squad, has openly discussed the persisting knee troubles that have plagued him for a considerable duration. The 33-year-old further emphasized the need for thorough assessments and tests to determine the feasibility of his participation in the crucial two-match Test series.

“I am ready to go, but only if there is no pain. There was some irritation in my knee for a very long time. I will have to get some tests and checkups done. So, if it is at the stage where it won’t trouble me again, I will surely go for the Test series,” Shami said.

Shami’s recent form

Shami showcased exceptional form during the recently concluded ODI 2023 World Cup, emerging as the leading wicket-taker with an impressive tally of 24 scalps from just seven outings. His stellar performance played a pivotal role in India’s campaign in the limited-overs tournament.
