The highly awaited auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 unfolded in Dubai on December 19, igniting a fervent bidding battle among the league’s 10 franchises, namely Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Lucknow Super Giants, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings, and Rajasthan Royals.

Featuring a roster of over 300 players, the auction pledged a mix of excitement and strategic maneuvers as teams sought to fortify their squads in preparation for the forthcoming season.

Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins steal the spotlight

The auction witnessed unprecedented fervor as Australian pace sensations Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins stole the spotlight, rewriting the record books in a bidding war that left cricket enthusiasts in awe. Starc, the lightning-fast Australian bowler, shattered previous records to become the costliest player in IPL auction history.

The Kolkata Knight Riders secured Starc’s services with a jaw-dropping bid of INR 24.75 crore (US$2,982,000 approx.), surpassing the former record held by Australia’s ODI World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins, who commanded a winning bid of INR 20.50 crore (US$2,470,000 approx.) from Sunrisers Hyderabad at the same bidding event. Starc’s return to the IPL auction spotlight marked a triumphant reunion with the Kolkata Knight Riders, who last acquired him in 2018 for INR 9.4 crore.

The auction spectacle didn’t limit itself to Australian prowess alone. Emerging talents from various cricketing nations also reaped the rewards of their stellar performances in the recent ODI World Cup in India. New Zealand’s dynamic duo, Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra, along with Australia’s Travis Head, South Africa’s versatile all-rounder Gerald Coetzee, and Sri Lanka’s promising pacer Dilshan Madushanka, clinched IPL deals, further amplifying the global flavor of the league.
