While Starc and Cummins basked in the glory of their massive contracts, Spencer quietly emerged as a dark horse, igniting a fierce bidding war between Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals (DC). The hammer eventually fell in favour of the Titans, leaving cricket enthusiasts intrigued about the young Aussie’s background, given his limited international exposure. Spencer Johnson was born in Adelaide on December 16, 1995, and hails from a middle-class family. His cricketing journey started when he made his List A debut during the 2017–18 One-Day Cup, representing South Australia against Victoria.

Spencer later joined the Adelaide Strikers team for the Big Bash League (BBL) 2020-21, marking a significant progression in his career. Nonetheless, he did not get any opportunity to showcase his skills on the field with the Adelaide-based franchise until his breakthrough moment arrived in the 2022–23 BBL season, donning the Brisbane Heat jersey.

Furthermore, Spencer made his First-class debut on February 20, 2023, representing South Australia in the 2022–23 Sheffield Shield season tournament.

International recognition and rise to prominence

In March 2023, a significant turning point unfolded in Spencer’s career when he was chosen to be part of the Australia A squad touring New Zealand. He showcased a remarkable performance in the first match of that tour, claiming four wickets for 53 runs in the first innings and catching the eye of cricket enthusiasts and team scouts.

Further catapulting his rise to prominence, Spencer made his debut for Oval Invincibles in the English League ‘The Hundred‘ in August 2023. His debut performance of 3/1 off 20 balls against Manchester Originals not only showcased his prowess but also attracted widespread attention.

August of the same year saw Spencer’s inclusion in Australia’s T20I series against South Africa, where he made an impactful international debut in the first match, contributing with figures of 2/33 in a convincing 111-run win. A month later, he also made his ODI debut for the Australian team against India.

Personal life and relationship status

Beyond the cricket field, Spencer leads a balanced personal life. He has been in a long-term relationship with Sarah Petherick, and the couple often shares glimpses of their quality time on social media platforms. Sarah is a constant presence in the stands and is often seen passionately cheering for Spencer during his matches.
