The second T20I of the Pakistan Women’s tour of New Zealand 2023 at University Oval in Dunedin turned out to be a thriller where the visitors managed a 10-run victory and claimed a historic series triumph.

Muneeba Ali takes Pakistan to a competitive total

The match lived up to its expectations with both teams displaying commendable performances. New Zealand Women won the toss and elected to bowl first. Pakistan Women set a target of 138 runs for the hosts, posting a total of 137/6 in their allotted 20 overs.

Muneeba Ali was the top-scorer for Pakistan, contributing 35 runs off 28 balls, while Aliya Riaz played a crucial innings of 32 runs off 22 balls. Fran Jonas and Molly Penfold were the pick of the bowlers for New Zealand, securing two wickets each.

In response, New Zealand Women tried their best to chase down the target but fell short, finishing at 127/7 in 20 overs. Hannah Rowe was the top-scorer for the hosts, making an impressive 33 runs off 24 balls.

Fatima Sana was the star with the ball for Pakistan, claiming three wickets for 22 runs in her four overs. Sadia Iqbal and Nida Dar also contributed with the ball, securing two and one wickets respectively. The match concluded with Pakistan Women emerging victorious by 10 runs, showcasing their resilience in defending the target.

First Asian side to beat New Zealand on their soil

Remarkably, Pakistan had secured a triumph in the initial game, and by emerging victorious in the second T20I, they confirmed their series win. The Pakistan Women’s team achieved a historic feat by becoming the first Asian side to defeat New Zealand on their home turf. In the broader context, they join England as the only other team to accomplish this, with England having achieved this milestone in 2012, 2015, and 2021.
