In a surprising turn of events at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction held at Dubai’s coco-cola arena on Tuesday (December 19), Punjab Kings (PBKS) made a significant blunder by unintentionally placing a winning bid for a player they didn’t actually want.
Punjab Kings’ costly mistake in the IPL Auction
The incident occurred during the accelerated part of the auction when PBKS aimed to secure uncapped Indian cricketers. After successfully acquiring Ashutosh Sharma and Vishwanath Pratap Singh, confusion arose during the bidding for Shashank Singh, leading to an inadvertent bid that couldn’t be reversed.
Chaotic scene at the PBKS table and
PBKS co-owner Preity Zinta, along with other team members, raised the paddle for Shashank. However, the chaos unfolded when they realized the mistake after the bid was accepted. Despite attempts by co-owner Ness Wadia and head coach Trevor Bayliss to rectify the error, the auctioneer Mallika Sagar clarified that, once the hammer has come down, the decision cannot be reversed. This left PBKS with an unwanted player in their squad.

Key takeaways from the auction
The PBKS wrapped up their squad for the IPL 2024 season, with the purchase of Harshal Patel and Chris Woakes being the key takeaways. However despite the unintentional bid, Shashank’s versatile abilities could make him a valuable asset for the Kings. Shashank gained attention with impactful performances for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2022. His recent form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2023, where he amassed 359 runs with two centuries, further solidifies his position as a dependable middle-order asset.
Fantastic scenes here as the notoriously inept Punjab Kings manage to not only purchase a player they didn’t want, (Shashank Singh), they also admit to this in front of literally everyone. Singh we can guess is sat at home wondering whether to show up in March. #IPLAuction #pbks pic.twitter.com/PtLQv9t07H
