India‘s recent defeat in the first Test of their ongoing tour to South Africa has sparked intense scrutiny, particularly due to the substantial margin of an innings and 32 runs. In the midst of this cricketing discourse, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar has weighed in with his perspective, shedding light on the reasons behind India’s setback at Centurion. Tendulkar’s insights provide valuable context to the team’s performance, offering a nuanced understanding of the factors contributing to their defeat.

Sachin Tendulkar’s praise for South Africa

Sachin praised South Africa for their performance, acknowledging that although there might have been initial concerns after the first innings, their pace attack exceeded expectations in the second innings. He commended their remarkable skill, especially considering that the pitch became more favourable for batting as the match progressed.

“Well played South Africa!, While I initially felt the South African team would’ve been unhappy after the 1st innings, their pace attack surpassed expectations and showcased remarkable skill in the 2nd innings, in spite of the pitch becoming more favourable for batting as the match progressed,” Sachin wrote on X.

Sachin’s critical remark for Indian batters

Sachin further pointed out concerns about India’s shot selection in the clash. The stalwart highlighted that only a handful of batters, including Dean Elgar, Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul appeared comfortable and demonstrated sound technique and poise while navigating the challenging conditions. It is worth noting that Rahul and Elgar crafted stellar centuries, scoring 101 and 185 runs, respectively, in the first innings.

“From whatever I watched, India’s shot selection left much to be desired. Throughout the Test, only a few batters, namely Dean Elgar, Marco Jansen, Bedingham, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul truly seemed at ease with the bat, navigating the conditions with technique and poise,” the 50-year-old added.
