Cricket enthusiasts were treated to a gripping encounter at Harare Sports Club as Zimbabwe clashed with Ireland in the opening match of the much-anticipated Ireland tour of Zimbabwe 2023. In a game that ebbed and flowed, Zimbabwe emerged victorious by the narrowest of margins, winning by just 1 wicket.

Opting to bowl after winning the toss, Zimbabwe’s decision to chase appeared justified as they managed to restrict Ireland to a modest total of 147/8 in their allotted 20 overs. The Zimbabwean bowlers, led by the spin wizard of skipper Sikandar Raza.

Sikandar showcased his bowling prowess, and finished with figures of 3 wickets for 28 runs. Gareth Delany was the top-scorer for the Irish side with unbeaten 26 from 11 deliveries, including 2 fours and as many sixes.

However, the game took an unpredictable turn as Zimbabwe began their chase. Facing a target of 148 runs, the Zimbabwean batters found themselves in a precarious position, with the match hanging in the balance. Sikandar once again rose to the occasion, playing a crucial knock of 65 runs off 42 balls. The right-handed batter smashed 5 fours and a couple of maximums to take his side close to the finishing line.

The tension escalated as Ireland’s bowlers, spearheaded by Mark Adair, Josh Little, and Barry McCarthy, struck back with timely wickets. With the match coming down to the wire, it was the lower-order resilience of Zimbabwe that ultimately made the difference. Blessing Muzarabani held his nerve, guiding the team to a heart-stopping victory with just 1 wicket in hand.

Sikandar credits the team’s collective effort behind thrilling win

In the post-match statement, Sikandar expressed his satisfaction at being part of a historic game and credited the enthusiastic fans for their support. Acknowledging that Ireland may have scored a few extra runs, he commended Gareth Delany for his impressive batting in the last over. Despite some mistakes, the Zimbabwe skipper emphasized the team’s collective effort in crossing the finish line, though he was personally disappointed not to finish the game himself, stressing the importance of not relying on tailenders.

“Nice to be part of history. Credit to the fans as well for coming out in numbers. They got maybe 5-8 too many. Credit to Delany for the way he batted in the last over. Some mistakes here and there, but most important thing is we’ve got over the line. I was upset that I didn’t finish the game. Don’t want to leave it to the tailenders. There was a lot of good things done by the team, and I’m proud of the team. Just wanted to tell him (Madande) that if you remain positive, you’ll see the ball better and strike it better. What happens on the park, stays on the park. It was played in the right spirit,” said Sikandar after bagging Player of the Match award.
