Ahead of the McGrath Foundation’s 16th annual Pink Test fundraising initiative, the 53-year-old expressed his confidence in veteran spinner Nathan Lyon surpassing his Test wickets milestone.

“To me, records are there for people to break. If ‘Lyono’ (Nathan Lyon) goes past (me), credit to him. He’s had an incredible career. I wish him all the best, I hope he goes past me. That’s what it’s about. I’ll still be the most wickets by a fast bowler, so at least I’ve got something up my sleeve,” McGrath was quoted as saying by India Today.

Nathan Lyon’s milestone of 500 wicket and path to surpassing McGrath

Nathan Lyon, Australia’s most accomplished off-spinner, achieved the much-awaited 500-wicket mark against Pakistan in the initial game of the ongoing three-match series in Perth. Lyon currently stands 64 wickets away from eclipsing the legendary Australian pacer McGrath’s record. At 36, Lyon has demonstrated no signs of diminishing prowess and has consistently proven to be a crucial asset for the Australian Test side, exhibiting exceptional performance both on foreign soil and at home.

Potential to overtake Shane Warne as well

What sets Lyon apart is his ability to trouble opposing batters with his off-spin, even on Australian pitches that are traditionally less conducive to spin bowling. McGrath not only endorsed Lyon to surpass his own record but went further to suggest that if Lyon continues playing, he could potentially surpass Shane Warne‘s remarkable tally of 708 Test wickets.

“Whether he gets to ‘Shano’, that might be a different kettle of fish. It’s up to him. He’s obviously bowling well, he knows the game so well. It’s totally up to him,” the Dubbo-born cricketer concluded.
