The commencement of Team India‘s five-match Test series against England took an unfavorable turn as they succumbed to a 28 runs defeat in the first encounter. The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad witnessed India’s struggle to chase a target of 231, ultimately getting bowled out for 202.

Defensive approach sparks criticism

India’s defensive strategy in the opening Test raised eyebrows and invited criticism. Many pundits and fans expressed dissatisfaction with the hosts’ gameplay, perceiving it as overly defensive. Speaking to Cricbuzz, Dinesh Karthik also voiced his disapproval of Rohit Sharma‘s tactics, emphasizing the need for more attacking field placements. Karthik highlighted that the team’s defensive stance played into England’s hands.

“Rohit Sharma needs to understand that in Test cricket, just like his batting, he needs to attack and show intent with the ball as well. A No. 9 or No. 10 batter can’t come on a turning pitch and take singles easily. He shouldn’t be allowing that. That is the time to buck up, and that’s an area they missed with the ball,” Karthik said.

Dinesh Karthik’s crucial advice to Rohit Sharma for the second Test

Karthik further offered his advice to Rohit, suggesting that in the upcoming Test, the captain should refrain from merely accepting the field set by the bowlers. Instead, the 38-year-old recommended that Rohit should proactively encourage the bowlers to adopt slightly more attacking field placements, especially against newly arrived opposition batters.

“India definitely didn’t bowl well. The one thing Rohit Sharma needs to do in the next Test is not accept whatever the bowler is setting in terms of field. A lot of the times I’ve seen bowlers sometimes try to be more defensive than they need to be. He needs to push the bowlers to set slightly attacking fields, at least to the opponent bowlers and batters who have just walked in,” the Chennai-born cricketer concluded.

England’s standout performers

Ollie Pope and Tom Hartley emerged as the standout performers for England in the opening Test. Pope’s impressive innings of 196 significantly contributed to the visitors’ formidable second-innings total of 420. On the bowling front, Hartley delivered an outstanding performance, picking seven wickets with figures of 7/62. His stellar effort played a crucial role in restricting India to achieved the target set by England.
