England‘s director of cricket, Rob Key recently shared insights into the potential return of Jofra Archer for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, slated to take place in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA) in June.

Jofra Archer’s elbow saga: The lingering challenge

Archer, grappling with a persistent elbow injury that resurfaced during his Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 stint with the Mumbai Indians (MI), has been on the sidelines, missing a substantial number of matches. His last appearance in an England jersey dates back to March 2023, and despite participating in training with the England white-ball team in the West Indies in December, Archer’s return remains shrouded in uncertainty.

Now Key conveyed a sense of optimism regarding Archer’s potential comeback for the T20 World Cup. The 44-year-old revealed that England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is adopting a gradual approach to rebuild Archer for the tournament. Key further expressed optimism that the persistent elbow issue, which has kept him out of action for the past eight months, will soon become a thing of history

“Our plan is the T20 World Cup, building him up slowly. I saw him bowl in the Caribbean and it was like he’d never been away,” Key was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

“I don’t want to get back to this thing where he plays and then goes down again. He (Archer) wanted to play in the IPL, but we said not this time. Hopefully, the years he has missed he can add to the end of his career. He is such a talent,” the East Dulwich-born concluded.

England, defending champions of the T20 World Cup, are poised to initiate their campaign against Scotland on June 3, marking a crucial juncture in their title defense bid.
