As Team India prepares to host England in an eagerly anticipated five-Test series set to commence in Hyderabad on Thursday (January 25), the stage is being set for a captivating showdown between these cricketing giants.

Leading up to the series opener, Jasprit Bumrah, the spearhead of India’s pace attack, revisited a fierce encounter with the seasoned English fast bowler, James Anderson, during the 2021 Lord’s Test, a match ultimately claimed by India with a 151-run victory.

A glimpse into the intense Lord’s encounter

Reflecting on his Test cricket journey in a candid interview with The Telegraph, Bumrah provided insights into a memorable 10-ball over bowled to Anderson on English soil. This particular over, marred by four no-balls and a series of bouncers strategically aimed at Anderson’s helmet, ribcage, and left hand, escalated into a heated exchange of verbal volleys between the two players.

Jasprit Bumrah’s concern met with James Anderson’s unfriendly response

Bumrah disclosed that, following this intense over, he approached Anderson with genuine concern for his well-being, only to receive a less-than-amicable response from the English stalwart. This incident not only heightened tensions between Bumrah and Anderson but also fueled intense exchanges within both teams, creating an atmosphere of palpable rivalry for the remainder of the match.

“I was tired, I thought the last wicket was there, I tried to push to bowl fast. I went up to him (mid-over), asked ‘Are you OK?’ and didn’t get a good response. So that brought back some young memories; trying to be the nice guy and it not being taken well. And it triggered the whole team. It was red mist but it was channeled,” Bumrah said.

Respect amidst rivalry

Despite the on-field intensity and spirited exchanges, Bumrah conveyed a profound respect for Anderson, acknowledging the veteran’s remarkable longevity and enduring impact on the cricketing stage. The upcoming Test series promises to be a clash of titans, and the historical backdrop between players adds an extra layer of anticipation to the impending on-field battles.

“A lot of credit to [Anderson], I can genuinely say I’ve been watching him since I was a child. It’s credit to him [he is still playing at 41], a testament to his hunger and passion. It’s one thing having helpful conditions but to keep doing all that preparation. Skill, technique can be learned but the will to keep going, that’s a big big tick for me,” the 30-year-old concluded.
