England’s star cricketer Joe Root achieved a notable milestone in Test cricket, further solidifying his impressive record. This accomplishment came on the opening day of the first Test match against India at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Record-breaking moment

Root has outpaced the renowned Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar to become the leading run-scorer in Test matches between India and England. Notably, the former England captain required a mere 10 runs to surpass Tendulkar’s record before stepping onto the field in Hyderabad. He accomplished this feat in style by smashing a boundary off Axar Patel in the 21st over of England’s first innings.

Leading up to this series, Root had amassed 2,526 runs in 25 matches against India, showcasing an impressive average of 63.15. This notable performance included nine centuries and 10 half-centuries. His proficiency in Indian conditions was evident from his previous tours, characterized by substantial scores, such as his memorable 218 in Chennai during the 2021 tour. However, in the first innings, Root was dismissed for 29 by Ravindra Jadeja.

It’s worth mentioning that Tendulkar previously held the record with 2,535 runs in 32 matches against England, maintaining an average of 51.73. Tendulkar’s remarkable record consists of seven centuries and 13 half-centuries.

Remarkable career stats

For more than ten years, Root has been the linchpin of England’s middle-order batting lineup in Test cricket. His ability to handle spin will be advantageous for England in the ongoing five-Test series in India. Root currently holds the title of the leading run-scorer among active cricketers in Test cricket. Additionally, he stands alone as the only active player to have accumulated over 10,000 Test runs.

Further, Root has notched up the most centuries in Tests between India and England, boasting a total of nine such hundreds. This places him ahead of Alastair Cook, Rahul Dravid, and Tendulkar, each of whom has accumulated seven centuries in these encounters.
