In a surprising turn of events, England fast bowler Lauren Bell has decided to opt out of the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) season. This decision has led the UP Warriorz franchise to announce the inclusion of Sri Lankan cricketing sensation Chamari Athapaththu as her replacement.
Why Lauren Bell opted out of WPL 2024?
Bell, who was signed by the Warriorz in the inaugural WPL auction for her base price of INR 30 lakhs, conveyed her decision to the UP franchise management. Her priority is to gear up for the New Zealand series, commencing on March 19 in Dunedin, just two days after the WPL final in Delhi.

Chamari Athapaththu, known for her explosive batting style, extensive experience, and leadership qualities, will now don the UP Warriorz jersey in the WPL 2024. The 33-year-old Sri Lankan captain is recognized as one of the most powerful hitters in the women’s game, having played in over 120 T20Is. Expressing her enthusiasm for joining the UP Warriorz, Athapaththu in her official statement mentioned, “I look forward to giving my best to the team and working closely with head coach Jon Lewis and skipper Alyssa Healy and help my team lift the coveted title.”
“The WPL is a very dynamic tournament, and the UP Warriorz is a strong squad,” she added.
