In a recent interview, Australian cricketing stalwart and seasoned spinner Nathan Lyon shared insights into his illustrious career, revealing the three best players he has encountered on the cricket field.
Lyon, who has been a linchpin in the Australian bowling attack for over a decade, acknowledged the challenges posed by numerous formidable opponents throughout his career. However, he singled out three players who have left a lasting impression on him.

When asked to name the best player he has played against, Lyon said: “That’s a very hard question. I have played against some of the greats of the game.”
Topping Lyon’s list is Indian maestro Virat Kohli. Lyon spoke highly of Kohli’s exceptional batting prowess and his ability to dominate across formats. “Facing Virat Kohli has always been a unique challenge. His skill, determination, and consistency make him one of the best batsmen I’ve bowled to,” Lyon commented.
The second player Lyon highlighted was the legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. Lyon emphasized Tendulkar’s technical proficiency and his status as a cricketing icon. “Sachin Tendulkar is a batting maestro, and his records speak volumes about his greatness. Bowling to him was an incredible experience,” Lyon stated.

The third player on Lyon’s list was the South African batting superstar AB de Villiers. Lyon lauded de Villiers’ innovative shot-making and the pressure he could exert on bowlers. “AB de Villiers is a true modern great. His ability to innovate and play shots all around the ground makes him a challenging opponent,” Lyon remarked.
Lyon finished year 2023 with 47 Test wickets
During the recently-concluded year, Lyon reached unprecedented levels of performance, capturing 47 wickets in ten matches. Lyon’s pinnacle moment occurred during the Perth Test against Pakistan, where he picked up his 500th wicket in red-ball cricket. Acknowledged for his knack in entangling opposition batters with his mesmerizing spin, Lyon solidified his position among the most prominent contemporary spin bowlers. He is now only just behind Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne among the leading wicket-takers as a spinner.
