In a heart-stopping moment during the ongoing pink-ball Test between Australia and West Indies at the Gabba, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc delivered a lethal yorker that left West Indies tailender Shamar Joseph in tears.

The incident occurred during the last session of play on Day 3 in Brisbane, and the video footage of the delivery has since gone viral across social media platforms.

Shamar Joseph retires hurt after being hit by Mitchell Starc

Starc, known for his express pace and deadly yorkers, produced a delivery that swung in late, beating Joseph’s defenses and crashing into his toe. The impact was immediate, and Joseph crumpled to the ground in visible pain. The medical team rushed to the field to assess the extent of the injury as Joseph, clearly distraught, was seen clutching his foot.

The heartbreaking scene unfolded in the 73rd over of the West Indies’ second innings. Starc’s lethal yorker not only sent shockwaves through the West Indies camp but also drew empathy from fans and fellow players alike.

Here’s the video:

Joseph, a promising young talent in West Indies cricket, was eventually given out LBW. With this, the West Indies innings came to an abrupt halt as Joseph, unable to continue, had to retire hurt. He displayed evident signs of immense pain and, after removing his shoe and assessing his thumb, walked out of the field.

West Indies left with two frontline pacers for the remaining match

Though the tour party’s second innings ended with a lead of 215 runs, they are now left with just two frontline quicks for the remainder of the match. While a target of 216 has never been successfully chased in the fourth innings of a pink ball Test, the absence of Joseph could prove crucial for the West Indies.

The 24-year-old has been the leading wicket-taker for the visitors in his debut series and also served as the primary disruptor of partnerships, consistently taking wickets against the run of play.
