In the SA T20 2024 clash at Boland Park in Paarl on Friday (January 12), the Paarl Royals secured a convincing 27-run victory over the Pretoria Capitals, largely propelled by an outstanding all-round performance from Andile Phehlukwayo. While Phehlukwayo contributions were notable, it was Mitchell van Buuren‘s extraordinary catch that stole the limelight during the SA20 league encounter.

Mitchell Van Buuren’s athletic marvel

Van Buuren’s display of sheer athleticism occurred when he executed a stunning catch to dismiss Rilee Rossouw. In the second delivery of the 10th over during the Capitals’ chase, Phehlukwayo delivered a well-disguised half-tracker outside off. Rossouw, anticipating the opportunity, aggressively charged down the pitch and unleashed a powerful shot.

The ball soared towards the general vicinity of van Buuren, who was stationed in the deep backward square leg. With impeccable timing, van Buuren executed a remarkable jump, intercepting the ball mid-air. This exceptional athleticism sent Rossouw, who had crafted a well-made 29 in just 18 balls, back to the pavilion.

This dismissal marked the turning point, as, aside from Phil Salt’s noteworthy contribution of 39, no other player made substantial contributions. The required run rate quickly escalated beyond achievable bounds, leading to a cascade of wickets at regular intervals. This sequence of events resulted in a 27-run loss for the Capitals. Phehlukwayo played a pivotal role in the outcome, securing figures of 2/29 from his four overs, while West Indian Obed McCoy concluded his four overs with figures of 1/26

Jason Roy sets the tone and Andile Phehlukwayo’s blistering finish

Batting first, the Royals had a strong start, with Jason Roy‘s aggressive 23-run knock setting the tone. The Capitals’ bowlers, however, managed to make breakthroughs, limiting the Royals to 44/2 at the end of the powerplay. Van Buuren, along with David Miller, stabilized the innings with a 61 runs partnership, guiding the team to a competitive total of 160/6.  Phehlukwayo blistering unbeaten cameo of 28 in the final overs further strengthened the Royals’ position.
