Despite the Firebirds suffering a seven-wicket defeat against the Knights, Smith’s outstanding catch provided a standout moment for the Wellington side.

The remarkable incident occurred in the fifth ball of the fourth over during the Knights’ run chase. Bowler Logan van Beek delivered a short-length ball outside off, enticing batter Katene Clarke to attempt a scoop shot over mid-wicket. Unfazed, Smith covered a significant distance from mid-on to deep mid-wicket, executing a spectacular catch that left everyone in awe. This extraordinary fielding effort resulted in Clarke departing after scoring 13 runs off 12 balls.

Wellington Firebird’s batting struggles
Earlier in the match, asked to bat first Wellington could only managed to post a 102/10 in 18.3 overs. The Knights bowlers, led by Scott Kuggeleijn, Zak Gibson and Matthew Fisher, each bagged two wickets, while Kristian Clarke, Tim Pringle and Fredrick Walker secured one scalp each. Smith top-scored for the Firebirds with 26 runs off 21 deliveries, featuring one maximum and three boundaries.

Despite the early setback with the loss of Clarke, the Knights successfully chased down the target in just 15.3 overs. Captain Jeet Raval played a pivotal role, scoring 32 runs off 28 balls, including one maximum and three boundaries. Useful contributions from Henry Cooper and others further ensured a comprehensive victory for the Knights.
