Ravichandran Ashwin, a stalwart in Indian cricket, has undeniably played a crucial role in shaping the team’s success over an extensive period. His participation in the last three ICC white-ball events, and considerably the ODI World Cup 2023, sparked considerable debate within the cricketing community.

However, as the T20I World Cup 2024 approaches, former cricketer Yuvraj Singh has shared his perspective on Ashwin’s potential inclusion in India’s limited-overs squad. Yuvraj’s opinion adds an intriguing layer to the ongoing discourse surrounding Ashwin’s role in white-ball cricket, providing fans and analysts with food for thought.

Yuvraj Singh on Ravichandran Ashwin

Yuvraj offered a nuanced perspective on Ashwin, recognizing the spinner’s prowess in Test cricket while raising doubts about his adequacy in limited-overs formats. He specifically questioned the spin-maestro’s contribution with the bat and in the field in white ball encounters, suggesting that his skills might be more fitting for Test matches.

“Ashwin is a great bowler but I don’t think he deserves a place in ODIs and T20s. He is very good with the ball, but what does he bring with the bat? Or as a fielder? In the Test team, yes, he should be there. But in white-ball cricket, I don’t think he deserves a place,” Yuvraj said as quoted by TNN.

Yuvraj on Hardik Pandya

Yuvraj emphasized the importance of Hardik Pandya in the Indian team, acknowledging his significance while expressing concern about his injury proneness. The Chandigarh-born cricketer suggested providing Pandya with the necessary time for recovery and stability, underlining the need to maximize his contributions.

“Hardik is a very important member of the team and India need him. He is injury prone and we need to give him time to recuperate and settle down. We have to get the best out of him. As for captaincy, we need to have more options,” the 43-year-old added.
