In a significant announcement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, Jay Shah, has revealed the names of India’s captain and vice-captain for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Dates and venue for the T20 World Cup 2024

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 is set to be jointly hosted by the West Indies and the United States, spanning from June 1 to June 29. Notably, this marks the inaugural ICC World Cup tournament to include matches held in the United States. Jay Shah discloses the names of Team India captain and vice-captain

Shah disclosed that Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian cricket team as captain for the prestigious tournament. Rohit, renowned for his exceptional leadership skills and remarkable batting prowess, will take charge of the team as they prepare to compete against the world’s best in the T20 format.

Additionally, Shah announced Hardik Pandya as the vice-captain of the Indian team for the T20 World Cup 2024. Hardik, known for his explosive batting style, dynamic all-round abilities, and strong leadership qualities, will play a pivotal role in supporting Rohit in his leadership responsibilities and contributing to the team’s success on the field.

“At this point in time, Rohit is an all-format captain. It is a collective decision, and the selectors are fully aligned on the matter. Hardik Pandya will retain his position as vice-captain for the T20 World Cup. Consider if Hardik gets injured, as he did in the previous World Cup. In such a scenario, who should we entrust with the leadership responsibility,” Shah said at a function hosted in Rajkot to rename the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium to the Niranjan Shah Stadium.

The BCCI secretary added, “If you recall the Afghanistan T20I match, we were in a tough spot at 27 for four, but Rohit’s remarkable century turned the game around. We can’t question his abilities. Although we won ten consecutive games in the World Cup, we fell short in the final. It’s part and parcel of the game.”

“I have not made any comments about the 2023 World Cup, in which we lost the final in Ahmedabad. However, I can assure you that India will clinch the T20 World Cup in Barbados on June 29 under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy,” Shah added further.

The announcement of Rohit as captain and Hardik as his deputy has generated excitement and anticipation among cricket fans across the country. With the T20 World Cup fast approaching, all eyes will be on the dynamic duo as they lead India’s charge in pursuit of cricketing glory on the global stage.
