India‘s recent defeat to England in the first Test at Hyderabad has triggered a thorough examination of Rohit Sharma‘s captaincy. Despite maintaining an undefeated series record  in the longest format since taking over from Virat Kohli, there is now active scrutiny and comparisons being drawn between their distinct leadership styles.

Ollie Pope’s masterclass and Tom Hartley’s heroics put India under scrutiny

The intensity of the debate heightened after England made a strong comeback in their second innings of the first Test in Hyderabad, outsmarting the hosts on a turning wicket. Ollie Pope, positioned at number 3, blunted India’s spin attack with an impressive knock of 196 runs. Adding to India’s woes, debutant Tom Hartley, who struggled in the first innings, delivered a stellar performance with a seven-wicket haul, ultimately bundling India out for 202 in pursuit of a target of 231.

Rohit Sharma’s captaincy scrutinized by England’s experts

The opinions of cricket experts, particularly within the English cricket fraternity like Michael Vaughan, converged on the belief that Kohli’s presence would have infused added strength to Team India, which crumbled against England’s resolute performance. Notable figures like the legendary Geoffrey Boycott goes a step further, expressing the view that Rohit Sharma is past his prime, suggesting the need for a complete overhaul in the Indian cricket setup.

Irfan Pathan’s perspective on the leadership debate between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared his perspective on the leadership debate between Kohli and Rohit during the Asian Legends League launch event.

Pathan highlighted the distinctive leadership qualities of both captains. He praised Kohli for his commendable captaincy, emphasizing the lasting impact of his aggressive approach throughout the five days of a Test match. In contrast, Pathan noted that Rohit’s leadership style is characterized by a different approach. He described Rohit as more tactical, actively involved in the game, and not displaying aggression to the extent seen in Virat Kohli.

“The way Virat led the side and the changes he induced into the team was commendable. People will remember his captaincy for ages. He carried the aggression throughout the five days of a Test match. On the other hand, Rohit’s way to leading the is completely different. He is more tactical and remains involved in the game. He doesn’t show his aggression as much as Virat,” Pathan said.
