New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson has been dealt a significant blow to his career, as scans reveal an injury that has forced him out of competitive cricket for the foreseeable future. This setback comes after his impressive performance in the first Test against South Africa, where he claimed six wickets. However, Jamieson felt soreness following the match, leading to his absence from the second Test in Hamilton. Further scans confirmed the extent of the issue, leaving him sidelined for an extended period.

Prolonged absence expected

Notably, the scans revealed a new stress fracture on his back. The latest stress fracture is located in the same area where Jamieson underwent surgery last year. Although surgery is not required this time, the recovery process is expected to keep him out of competitive cricket for at least a year. This setback adds to Jamieson’s already frustrating spell on the sidelines due to recurring back issues.

Kyle Jamieson’s previous challenges

The 29-year-old has faced numerous setbacks in recent years due to back injuries. After initially getting injured in June 2022, he made a comeback in February last year against England. However, a recurrence of the injury just before his anticipated return forced him to undergo surgery, sidelining him for several months. Despite his successful return to all three formats post-recovery, this latest setback will see him miss the entirety of 2024.

Jamieson opens up on his injury

In a statement, Jamieson expressed gratitude for the support he has received during this challenging time. He acknowledged that injuries are part of a cricketer’s life and remained hopeful for his future playing days. Speaking at a press conference, Jamieson highlighted the mental and emotional challenges associated with his recovery, emphasizing the need to overcome these hurdles.

“The last few days have been some of my most challenging but I am hugely grateful for the support I’ve received from my partner, family, teammates, support staff and medical professionals. I know injuries are part of life as a cricketer and at my age I am hopeful I still have many more playing days ahead of me,” said Jamieson in a statement.

Looking ahead

As Jamieson embarks on another road to recovery, he faces both physical and mental obstacles. Despite the setbacks, he remains determined to overcome these challenges and return stronger. However, for now, the New Zealand cricket fraternity will have to wait patiently for the talented speedster to make his comeback to competitive cricket.

“I’ve got a bit of a roadmap as to how to manage it. I know some of the hurdles I’ll have to overcome, probably more mentally and emotionally, the physical side is the easy part. You just rest and build back up. It’s almost autopilot in a way. It’s more the mental hurdles, months on end, you are halfway through and a fair bit of time has gone and there’s still a fair chunk of time away. It’s tough because you don’t want to go through it again. You hope that each time is the last time but I’m also 6’8” and trying to bowl fast, so know it’s definitely part of the journey,” explained Jamieson.
