• Yashasvi Jaiswal has smashed the joint-highest sixes in an innings in Test cricket.

In a breathtaking display of power-hitting against England at Rajkot, Team India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal left an indelible mark on the history of Test cricket by smashing the joint-highest sixes in a single innings.

Jaiswal, who retired hurt on the evening on Day 3 after sustains a back spasm, returned to the crease after the dismissal of Shubman Gill. 

The 22-year-old  took on the opposition bowlers with a flurry of attacking shots. He reserved his best for James Anderson, with four of his maximums coming against the veteran fast bowler.

Jaiswal and fellow Mumbaikar Sarfaraz Khan added an unbeaten 172-run partnership for the fifth wicket in 26.2 overs as they made batting look very easy for the home team. India declared their second innings at a score of 430/4, setting a record target of 557 for England to chase.

 Players with the most sixes in an innings in Test cricket:

  • Wasim Akram: The legendary Pakistan cricketer set the bar high during a Test match against Zimbabwe in Sheikhupura during the 1996/97 season. Akram’s astonishing knock of 257 not out saw him dispatching the ball over the boundary rope a staggering 12 times.
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal: The young Indian batter announced his arrival on the international stage with a scintillating innings against England in Rajkot during the 2023/24 season. Jaiswal’s unbeaten knock of 214 not out included an impressive tally of 12 sixes.
  • Nathan Astle: The New Zealand cricketer showcased his power-hitting prowess against England in Christchurch during the 2001/02 season, smashing 11 sixes during his innings of 222 runs.
  • Matthew Hayden: The Australian batting maestro left a trail of destruction during a Test match against Zimbabwe at the Perth WACA ground in the 2003/04 season. Hayden’s monumental innings of 380 included an astonishing 11 sixes.
  • Brendon McCullum: The former New Zealand captain made his mark with two innings featuring 11 sixes each. Firstly, against Pakistan in Sharjah during the 2014/15 season, where he scored 202 runs, and then against Sri Lanka in Christchurch during the same season, where he scored 195 runs.
  • Ben Stokes: The English all-rounder showcased his exceptional batting skills during a Test match against South Africa in Cape Town during the 2015/16 season. Stokes’ remarkable innings of 258 featured an impressive tally of 11 sixes.
  • Kusal Mendis: The Sri Lankan batsman joined the elite club of big hitters during a Test match against Ireland in Galle during the 2023 season. Mendis’ brilliant knock of 245 runs saw him clearing the boundary ropes 11 times.
