In a whimsical twist of fate, three Bangladesh fielders stationed at slip missed an elementary catch off Sri Lanka‘s Prabath Jayasuriya during Day 2 of the ongoing second Test at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittogram on Sunday, March 31.

Three Bangladesh fielders fumble an elementary-level catch

On the fifth delivery of the 121st over, Khaled Ahmed sent down a full-pitched ball outside the off-stump, enticing Jayasuriya to drive confidently with his front foot. However, Jayasuriya’s timing was awry, resulting in an outside edge towards the first slip, where the Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto juggled the ball twice before it deflected off his palm towards a diving second slip, Shahadat Hossain.

In a series of unfortunate events, Hossain also fumbled the catch, allowing the ball to loop off his hand toward a fully stretched third slip fielder, Zakir Hasan, who was unable to complete the catch. Despite the coordinated efforts of three Bangladesh players, they were unable to secure the straightforward catch in the slip cordon.

Sri Lanka capitalizes on Bangladesh’s fielding mishap

Sri Lanka were positioned at 419 for 6 when Jayasuriya was granted a second chance. He capitalized on this opportunity, amassing 28 runs off 75 balls with 3 fours as Sri Lanka reached a formidable total of 531 runs in 159 overs. Shakib Al Hasan, making a triumphant return to Test cricket after nearly 12 months, emerged as the standout performer among the bowlers, concluding with figures of 3/110.

Hasan Mahmud, making his Test debut, made a significant impact by dismissing Dimuth Karunaratne and Angelo Mathews. Meanwhile, Kamindu Mendis, who had previously notched twin centuries in the Sylhet Test, remained unbeaten on 92, displaying his prowess with 7 fours and 2 sixes.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy’s dismissal disrupts the solid start

In response, Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Zakir laid a solid foundation for the side, establishing a 47 runs partnership for the first wicket. Nevertheless, their momentum was disrupted when Lahiru Kumara claimed the wicket of Hasan Joy. At the close of play on Day 2, Sri Lanka had reached 55/1, with Taijul Islam yet to open his account and Zakir Hasan contributing 21 runs.
