Day 3 of the fifth Test between India and England in Dharamsala witnessed a on-field altercation between Jonny Bairstow and Indian player Shubman Gill, where Sarfaraz Khan eventually joined in.
Jonny Bairstow’s verbal spat
The incident was sparked by Bairstow’s displeasure over Gill sledging James Anderson about his fatigue during India’s first innings. While doing so Bairstow also reminded Gill was of his dismissal to Anderson.
“What did you say to Jimmy about getting tired and he got you out after that?,” said Bairstow.
Gill showcased an exceptional performance before his departure, contributing a remarkable 110 runs to the team’s total. His partnership with captain Rohit Sharma for the first wicket further strengthened the team’s position, amassing an impressive 171 runs. Gill’s innings, consisting of 150 balls, was a display of skill and aggression, adorned with 12 fours and five sixes. Unfortunately, his innings came to an end when he was cleanly bowled by Anderson, but not before leaving a significant impact on the match.
Shubman Gill’s response to Bairstow: Enquiring about stats
In response to Bairstow’s inquiry about Gill’s comment to Anderson, the young Indian batter cheekily reminded the English batter about his dismissal, saying, “So what, it was after a hundred. How many have you got here?” Gill effectively used his recent century against England to counter Bairstow’s query.
Bairstow’s retort: Taking a dig at Gill’s hundred
Unwilling to back down, Bairstow took a dig at Gill’s record in England, asking, “How many have you got in England (full stop)?” In three game in England, gill could scored only 88 runs with a poor average of 14. 66 The exchange continued as both players engaged in banter and tried to assert their dominance in the verbal duel.

He shouldn’t show attitude for scoring a few runs in the series,” Sarfaraz’s remark added an extra layer of intensity to the on-field confrontation.
