Mumbai Indians (MI) took a bold step before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 Auction, appointing Hardik Pandya as the captain, replacing the highly successful Rohit Sharma. Despite Rohit leading the franchise to a record IPL victory five times, the management opted for a change. Hardik, previously the captain of Gujarat Titans (GT), won the title in 2022 and was the runner-up in 2023.

Fans criticism and expert opinions

The decision received criticism from fans who expressed discontent with the change in leadership. Experts, including former Indian player and ex-MI pacer Praveen Kumar, weighed in on the captaincy saga. In a viral video, Praveen addressed questions about the controversial decision and raised concerns about Hardik’s commitment to the game.

Praveen Kumar’s affirmation on Hardik Pandya

Praveen didn’t mince words when asked about the controversy. He criticized Hardik for his approach, stating that the all-rounder got injured two months before the IPL and didn’t play for the country or his state in domestic cricket. Praveen expressed his disapproval of neglecting national and state cricket for the IPL, emphasizing the importance of balancing financial interests with commitment to the sport.

“You got injured two months before the IPL, you don’t play for the country, you don’t play for your state in domestic cricket, and just directly play in the IPL. That’s not how things should be done. It’s okay to earn money; there’s nothing wrong in that. But it’s not good to neglect your cricket for state and country and only give importance to the IPL,” Praveen said.

Rohit Sharma’s captaincy potential

Responding to queries, Praveen further asserted that Rohit could have continued as the captain for another year or more. He believed Rohit had the capability to lead the team successfully, but the ultimate decision rested with the management.

“Yes, Rohit can do it. Not only for one year, but he can do it for two years, three years. But eventually, the decision lies in the hands of the management,” the 37-year-old concluded.

Hardik Pandya’s challenge as a new MI skipper

Amidst the criticism, Hardik faces the significant challenge of stepping into Rohit’s shoes. Rohit’s captaincy legacy included IPL victories in 2013, 2014, 2017, 2019, and 2020. Beyond leadership, Rohit’s impact as an hard-hitting batter is also highlighted. Hardik now will have the responsibility of guiding the team to new heights in the 17th edition of the IPL.

Opening match against Gujarat Titans (GT)

Adding intrigue to the situation, Mumbai-based franchise, under Hardik’s captaincy, will face Gujarat, his former team, in their tournament opener on March 24. Shubman Gill will lead the Gujarat, creating a compelling matchup between the two sides.
