Former Indian cricketer Murali Kartik found himself in hot water after making disparaging remarks about Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) bowler Yash Dayal during a recent match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 tournament.
Murali Kartik’s criticism sparks outrage
During his commentary stint on Sunday, March 25, Kartik referred to Dayal as “trash,” sparking outrage among cricket enthusiasts on social media platforms. His comment, “someone’s trash is someone’s treasure,” drew swift condemnation, with fans expressing their displeasure and flooding social media with memes targeting the former cricketer.
Context behind the comment
Kartik’s remark seemingly stemmed from Dayal’s previous performance for Gujarat Titans in the 2023 IPL season, where he had a forgettable outing against Rinku Singh of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Dayal’s struggles during that match led to his sidelining and eventual release from the team.
RCB’s gold response
In response to Kartik’s comments, RCB came to Dayal’s defense, highlighting his commendable performance during the match against Shikhar Dhawan-led Punjab. The franchise took to Twitter to laud Dayal, indirectly rebuking Kartik’s remarks. The official RCB Twitter handle posted a tweet praising Dayal’s contribution, affirming their belief in his talent and dismissing Kartik’s disparaging comments.
“He’s treasure. Period,” read the tweet from @RCBTweets, accompanied by a photo of Dayal.

RCB claim first win of IPL 2024
Facing Punjab team, Dayal showcased exceptional form with the ball. He claimed the crucial wicket of star all-rounder Sam Curran and concluded with notable figures where he conceded only 23 runs off his 4 overs while taking one wicket. Remarkably, Dayal emerged as the most economical bowler for RCB, playing a pivotal role in constraining the Kings to 176/6 in their allotted 20 overs.
In pursuit of 177 runs, RCB faced early setbacks with the dismissals of Faf du Plessis and Cameron Green at minimal expense. However, Virat Kohli‘s resilient innings steered the team’s chase, as he accumulated 77 runs from 49 deliveries. Subsequently, Dinesh Karthik showcased his aggressive batting prowess, notching up 28 runs from just 10 balls as RCB comfortably clinched victory.
