Robin Uthappa picks 4 players who could fetch ₹100 crore in a cap-free IPL auction

Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa has sparked debate by suggesting that four players could command a staggering ₹100 crore price tag in the Indian Premier League (IPL) if the salary cap didn’t exist.

Current salary cap limits star power:

The IPL currently restricts each franchise’s spending to ₹100 crore per season. This restriction has led to some of the world’s best players, like Australia’s Mitchell Starc (₹24.75 crore) and Pat Cummins (₹20.50 crore), fetching record-breaking salaries, but still falling well short of a hypothetical ₹100 crore mark.

Uthappa’s dream team:

Uthappa believes that in a scenario without a salary cap, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah would all be worth a mind-boggling ₹100 crore to IPL franchises.

“Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah will go for 100 crore if there’s no salary cap in the IPL,” stated Uthappa on News24 Sports.

Current salaries reflect franchise loyalty:

The above mentioned players are already among the highest earners in the IPL, but their current salaries reflect a sense of loyalty to their respective franchises. Kohli (₹15 crore) has been retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), while Rohit (₹16 crore), Bumrah (₹12 crore) and Suryakumar (₹8 crore) are all part of the core group at Mumbai Indians (MI).

Injury concerns for key players:

While Uthappa’s hypothetical scenario is intriguing, it’s important to note that injuries can play a role in a player’s value. Suryakumar is currently recovering from ankle surgery and is expected to miss the initial stages of IPL 2024.

Rohit and Bumrah, on the other hand, are coming off a successful Test series against England and will join the MI camp soon.
