South Africa unveils women’s squad for the home T20I series against Sri Lanka
South Africa name squad for T20Is against Sri Lanka

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced their 15-player squad representing the Proteas Women in the  home T20 International (T20I) series against Sri Lanka. The series is scheduled to be held from March 27 to April 3 across different venues including Benoni, Potchefstroom, and East London.

New faces and returning players

Three changes have been made from the previous touring party that faced Australia in a T20I series in January. Notably, young wicketkeeper-batter Karabo Meso has earned her maiden national call-up, joining the returning duo of all-rounder Annerie Dercksen and seamer Tumi Sekhukhune.

Rising star: Karabo Meso

Meso gained prominence following an impressive performance at the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup held in South Africa last year. Her inclusion comes as no surprise after being named as part of the Team of the Tournament.

Leadership continuity and squad composition

Laura Wolvaardt will continue leading the Proteas Women, providing stability and experience to the team. The squad includes familiar names such as Tazmin Brits, Nadine de Klerk, Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, Masabata Klaas, and Chloé Tryon, ensuring a balanced mix of experience and youthful vigor.

Coach’s perspective

Proteas Women Head Coach Hilton Moreeng expressed confidence in the squad’s core and emphasized the importance of providing opportunities to new talents. Moreeng highlighted Meso’s potential and expressed eagerness to see her performance in the upcoming series.

“We still have the core of the squad to make sure we can continue with what we’ve been working on regarding the T20Is. The build-up has been coming along nicely and now it’s just for us to deservingly give opportunities for those one or two spots we want to have a look at,” said Moreeng in a statement.

“There are a few youngsters coming in and one debutant in Karabo Meso who has been part of the High-Performance group and in the U19 World Cup. It’s a youngster who’s got a lot of potential and one we’re looking to see how she goes when given the opportunity,” Moreeng added.
