In an exciting encounter at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Sri Lanka secured a crucial victory over Bangladesh in the second One Day International (ODI) and levelled the series 1-1.
Wanindu Hasaranga keeps Bangladesh under check
Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka restricted Bangladesh to a competitive total of 286/7 in their allotted 50 overs. Despite strong performances from Soumya Sarkar (68 runs) and Towhid Hridoy (96 runs), Wanindu Hasaranga‘s four-wicket haul kept Bangladesh from accelerating in the latter stages of their innings.
Pathum Nissanka takes Sri Lanka over the finish line
Chasing a target of 287 runs, Sri Lanka faced early setbacks with Avishka Fernando departing for a duck. However, Pathum Nissanka‘s magnificent century (114 runs off 113 balls) anchored the Sri Lankan innings, supported by Charith Asalanka‘s aggressive 91 runs.
Despite some resistance from the Bangladesh bowlers, including Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed, Sri Lanka managed to reach the target with three wickets in hand and 17 balls to spare, securing victory in a closely contested match.
Nissanka’s exceptional batting performance earned him the Player of the Match award, showcasing his ability to anchor the innings under pressure. Hasaranga’s pivotal four-wicket haul during Bangladesh’s innings also played a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s victory, highlighting the team’s all-round performance.

Its time that we start including Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka among the best top order and middle order batsman in the world respectively!!
SL was 43/3 when these two put up a 170 runs stand. And they have been doing it consistently in the past 12 months or so!!#BANvsSL pic.twitter.com/Nfn7jM99Ls

Been a remarkable year this has been for Pathum Nissanka. Only his sixth ODI in 2024 and he’s got two hundreds and a double. The highest run scorer in the world too in 2024. Made his plans clear that he wants to be the number one batter in the world. Currently, he’s ranked 11th.
