YouTube sensation Ajey Nagar, widely known as CarryMinati, recently found himself amidst controversy after facing heavy criticism for his remarks about Virat Kohli‘s Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy record. The famous Youtuber drew the ire of passionate Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kohli supporters following his comments in a promotional segment on Star Sports.

CarryMinati’s controversial remarks on Virat Kohli

In a widely circulated video, CarryMinati took a jibe at Kohli, humorously suggesting that one doesn’t need to adhere to a strict diet regimen to secure an IPL trophy. The YouTuber quipped that Kohli refrains from indulging in sweets not out of personal choice, but rather because RCB have consistently denied him the opportunity to celebrate with a trophy.

He playfully insinuated that Kohli’s dietary discipline stemmed from his team’s lack of championship success, dismissing the notion of dieting as merely an excuse.  Drawing a comparison with Rohit Sharma, CarryMinati remarked that champions like him don’t need to regulate their diets as extensively, hinting at the disparity between Sharma’s multiple IPL triumphs and Kohli’s trophyless streak.

“Virat Kohli has given up eating sweets because he never gets a chance to celebrate. Diet is just an excuse. Look at Rohit Bhai, when a person wins, he does not need to diet. Are you listening, Virat?,” CarryMinati said.

Backlash from RCB fans

The humorous tone of the remarks was intended to entertain, but it inadvertently sparked controversy and backlash from Kohli’s supporters.  As RCB and Kohli fans flooded social media with disapproving messages and targeted the YouTuber with a barrage of criticism. The backlash didn’t go unnoticed, particularly with CarryMinati’s association with Star Sports for IPL 2024-related content. The incident triggered a social media storm, with the hashtag ‘Shame on Carry Minati’ trending across platforms.

Clarification on the situation

Following the backlash for his comments directed at Kohli in a viral video, Carry Minati promptly addressed the situation on his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. In his clarification, the 24-year-old asserted that the remarks were made in the context of a skit and were not intended to mock Kohli personally.

He emphasized that he was portraying a character parodying the RCB team in a promotional video. By providing this clarification, CarryMinati aimed to mitigate any misunderstandings and clarify the lighthearted nature of his commentary, emphasizing that it was all part of scripted entertainment rather than genuine criticism directed at Kohli.

“I just checked twitter thodi misunderstanding hogyi hai, I am doing a show usme ek skit hai jisse log gussa ho rahe hai, please watch the whole skit to understand the narrative. why would I disrespect Virat bhai in real life, it is a skit, it’s not meant to disrespect. We are playing characters in which I am parody of RCB fans there is nothing more to it. Here is a clip of me being his fan from the same skit, Baaki aap logo ki marzi hai aap audience ho aap se mujhe nhi jeetna,” CarryMinati wrote.

Kohli’s quest for IPL glory despite challenges

Kohli, a stalwart figure in RCB’s history, has been at the forefront of the team’s campaigns throughout the IPL’s history, yet the elusive trophy has remained beyond their grasp. Despite Kohli’s consistent contributions as a top-order batter since his inception into the franchise as a promising U-19 cricketer in 2008, RCB have been unable to clinch the title. As they gear up for another season in IPL 2024, Kohli remains determined to change the narrative and lead his team to glory.
