The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed a new spin bowling coach ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. BCB has announced the appointment of former Pakistan spin sensation Mushtaq Ahmed as their new spin coach. This announcement was made on Tuesday, and Mushtaq will take over the role previously held by Sri Lanka legend Rangana Herath, who had been in the position since 2021.

Preparatory camp and T20I series

Mushtaq will join the team in Dhaka for the preparatory camp before the side’s T20I series against Zimbabwe next month. He will be working closely with the rest of the coaching staff, including head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, assistant coach Nic Pothas, batting coach David Hemp, and fast bowling coach Andre Adams.

Vast coaching experience

Mushtaq brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously served as a spin bowling coach for the England men’s team from 2008 to 2014. He also held coaching positions with the Pakistan cricket team as a bowling consultant from 2014 to 2016 and as spin bowling coach from 2020 to 2022.

A decorated playing career

As a player, Mushtaq was part of the Pakistan team that won the 1992 World Cup. He played 144 ODIs and 52 Tests for the national team and had a successful stint in county cricket. Mushtaq was the highest wicket-taker in the English county cricket season in 1993 and in consecutive seasons from 2003 to 2007.

Excitement about new role

Mushtaq expressed his excitement about joining the Bangladesh cricket team as their spin bowling coach. He noted the team’s potential and the talent of its players, stating that he aims to pass on his experience to them and instill a belief in their ability to compete against any team.

“It is a great honor for me to be a part of the Bangladesh cricket team as a spin bowling coach. I am looking forward to the role and want to pass my experience to the players because they are very coachable and I always believe that they are one of the most dangerous teams around. They can beat anyone because they have the capability, the resources, and the talent. I will try to instill that belief into them. I am very excited at the opportunity to work with the team,” said Mushtaq in an official statement.
