Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami is itching to get back on the field after undergoing rehabilitation for an Achilles tendon injury. The setback not only forced him to miss the ongoing IPL season but also kept him out of the five-match Test series against England earlier this year.
Mohammed Shami eyes comeback in professional cricket
Shami’s last appearance for India came in the heart-wrenching ODI World Cup final against Australia in November. Playing through the pain, Shami displayed remarkable grit and emerged as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with a staggering 24 scalps in just 7 matches. However, his commitment to the team came at a cost, necessitating a break from the national team’s tour of South Africa and the T20I series against Afghanistan in January to prioritize his recovery. Thankfully, the surgery performed in February proved successful.
Despite these recent hurdles, Shami’s fighting spirit remains unbroken. Sharing a motivational reel on Instagram, the 33-year-old captioned it, “Injuries don’t define you, your comeback will.. Can’t wait to be back out there with my team! #mdshami #recoveryjourney #shami #mdshami11.”

Shami’s success for Gujarat Titans
Shami’s contributions to Gujarat Titans (GT) have been instrumental in their initial success. He picked up 20 wickets in their maiden IPL season in 2022 and followed it up with a stellar performance in 2023, claiming 28 wickets at a phenomenal average of 18.64. His new-ball prowess was particularly devastating, earning him the coveted ‘Purple Cap’ for the most wickets in the season.
Missing the entirety of IPL 2024 significantly reduces Shami’s chances of featuring in India’s upcoming T20 World Cup squad this June. However, his determination and fighting spirit suggest a potential return for the crucial Test assignments later this year, including the series against Bangladesh and Australia.
