In a recent setback for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), their star opener Devon Conway has been ruled out of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 due to injury, dealing a blow to the defending champions. This news was confirmed on Thursday (April 18), further complicating CSK’s campaign.
Devon Conway’s injury
Conway had already been set to miss the first half of the season due to thumb surgery, making his absence an extended one. His role in CSK’s victorious IPL 2023 campaign was pivotal, as he amassed an impressive 672 runs with an exceptional average of over 50. Moreover, his partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad at the top of the order had been instrumental in CSK’s success.
Chennai Super Kings’ new joining
To mitigate the loss, CSK management has drafted in England seamer Richard Gleeson for the remaining matches of the tournament. Gleeson brings with him a wealth of experience, having made his mark on the international stage against India in 2022 and featuring in six T20Is, where he has claimed nine crucial wickets.

His memorable debut performance, which included dismissing top-tier batters like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, underscores his value to the team. In that match he finished with figures of 3/15 in his spell of four overs. As far as overall T20s go, the veteran has featured in 90 matches, taking 101 wickets at 24.32 apiece.
CSK’s performance in the IPL 2024 points table
Meanwhile, CSK are currently holding the 3rd spot in the points table with 4 wins in 6 matches. The defending champions opened their campaign with victories over the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Gujarat Titans (GT). They suffered consecutive losses to the Delhi Capitals (DC) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), but bounced back to beat the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians (MI).
