Rajasthan Royals (RR) turned their fortunes around with a gritty three-wicket triumph over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a tightly contested Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match at Mullanpur Stadium on Saturday (April 13). Despite being a low-scoring affair, the game provided ample excitement for fans.
Shimron Hetmyer’s heroics
Shimron Hetmyer‘s innings stood out as the defining moment for RR as he showcased determination and entertainment in equal measure. His unbeaten 27 off just 10 deliveries played a crucial role in securing victory for RR in the last-over thriller. Notably, this defeat marked the PBKS franchise’s second loss on their home ground, adding to the significance of RR’s achievement.
The partnership between Hetmyer and Rovman Powell
In the absence of the explosive Jos Buttler, the responsibility fell on Hetmyer and Buttler’s replacement for the clash, Rovman Powell to anchor the chase for RR. The duo displayed commendable resilience, forging a vital 21-run partnership off just seven balls. While Powell contributed 11 runs off 5 balls, it was Hetmyer’s composed presence at the crease that guided RR to a thrilling win.

Powell’s insight on Buttler’s return
Following the match, Powell provided insights into Jos Buttler’s potential return, indicating that the English batter would be back for the franchise’s upcoming clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Tuesday. Additionally, Powell reflected on the partnership with Hetmyer during the chase, emphasizing their calm approach and shared determination to finish the game early.
“I think they are doing some very good work with him, I think he would be out for another day or two but it’s good that we have a game in three-four days, so he will likely be back by then. I am a good player, if I not getting games then it means the team is doing well. Whenever I get an opportunity, I will give my best,” Powell said in a post-match interview.
“Definitely, it’s important for us to get two points, the guys are keeping up, and credit to the guys. The good thing is we both are calm, we talked that we should run fast, we are West Indians, and we are boundary-hitters. It’s a challenge but we are professional cricketers,” the 30-year-old concluded.
Morale boost for RR
Earlier in the day, RR’s bowlers showcased discipline and skill to keep PBKS’s batters in check for the majority of the innings. Despite Impact Player Ashutosh Sharma‘s spirited cameo of 31 off 16 balls towards the end, PBKS’s total of 148 runs fell short against a confident RR side. This victory not only boosted RR’s morale but also underscored their resilience in the face of challenging situations.
