New Zealand and England took on each other in the recently-concluded second Women’s ODI at Seddon Park. The visitors once again displayed a clinical performance and registered a victory by 56 runs. With the win, England also managed to seal the series 2-0 with one game left to be played.
Tammy Beaumont sizzles with the bat
England Women won the toss and elected to bat first, setting a challenging target of 253 runs for New Zealand Women. England’s innings was led by a resilient performance from Tammy Beaumont, who scored a crucial 81 runs off 96 balls, supported by Amy Jones with a brisk 48 off 40 balls. Despite a few quick wickets in the middle overs, contributions from Heather Knight (37) and Sophie Ecclestone (14) pushed England to a competitive total of 252 runs.
New Zealand’s bowling attack, spearheaded by Jess Kerr and Lea Tahuhu, tried to contain the England batters but couldn’t prevent them from posting a formidable score.
Nat Sciver’s brilliant bowling takes England home
In response, New Zealand Women started steadily with Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer, but the English bowlers, led by Natalie Sciver‘s excellent spell of 3 wickets for 21 runs, kept the pressure on. Brooke Halliday‘s resilient 57 and Izzy Gaze‘s 47 provided some hope for the hosts, but England’s disciplined bowling restricted them to 196 runs.
England’s bowling unit showcased a collective effort with crucial breakthroughs at regular intervals. Sciver, Kate Cross, and Sophie Ecclestone each claimed vital wickets to dismantle the New Zealand batting lineup. Despite some resistance from New Zealand’s lower order, England Women emerged victorious by 56 runs, showcasing their dominance in both batting and bowling departments.
