Jasprit Bumrah, a critical figure in Indian cricket across all formats, recently shared a surprising detail about his past in a candid interview with his wife Sanjana Ganesan on JioCinema. The conversation revealed how one decision, influenced by his mother, altered the course of his life.

Jasprit Bumrah shares his backup plan in life

While rising through the ranks of domestic cricket, Bumrah, along with his family, contemplated a move to Canada. This backup plan involved finishing his education and potentially starting a new life there. His wife prompted the revelation with a question, “You wanted to go to Canada and set up a new life there?”

Bumrah elaborated: “We have had these conversations before. Every boy wants to make it big and play cricket. Every street has 25 players who want to play for India. You have to have a backup plan. Our relatives live there. I thought I will finish my education and move there as my uncle lives there.”

However, his mother’s career as a school principal proved to be the turning point. “Initially, the plan was for the whole family to go,” Bumrah explained, “but then my mom, being a principal, wasn’t comfortable relocating. A different culture presented challenges.”

Looking back, Bumrah acknowledged his good fortune, “I am very happy and very lucky that things worked out. Otherwise, I don’t know I would have tried to play for the Canadian team and do something there as well. Glad it worked out here. I am playing for the Indian team and Mumbai Indians.”

Bumrah records best bowling figures in IPL 2024

Bumrah delivered a standout performance in the ongoing edition of IPL by claiming the best bowling figures for Mumbai Indians (MI) during their match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday.

Registering impressive figures of 5/21, Bumrah attained the second five-wicket haul of the season, surpassing Yash Thakur‘s earlier record of 5/30. Notably, this marked the first instance of a bowler achieving a five-wicket haul against RCB in IPL history.

This accomplishment also marks Bumrah’s second five-wicket haul in his IPL career, making him only the fourth bowler to achieve this feat in the tournament’s history.
