Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has been ruled out of the remainder of the IPL 2024 due to a hamstring injury and has returned to Sri Lanka for rehabilitation, it was confirmed on Sunday.
Injury Sustained Earlier
Pathirana, a vital cog in CSK’s bowling attack, had picked up the Grade 1 hamstring strain in his left leg during Sri Lanka‘s second T20I against Bangladesh earlier in March. This forced him to miss the third match of the series and raised doubts about his availability for the initial stages of IPL 2024.
However, Pathirana recovered from the injury and came to India to represent the defending champions, CSK. He played six matches for CSK this season and picked up 13 wickets at a bowling average of 13.
CSK Bowling Attack Hit
Ahead of CSK’s clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS), Pathirana was called back to Sri Lanka by his national board. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) wants the youngster to be 100% fit for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Pathirana’s absence is a significant blow to CSK’s bowling attack, particularly in the death overs where his pace and accuracy were expected to be crucial. The team will have to look at alternative options to fill the void left by the Sri Lankan fast bowler.
