Gujarat Titans (GT) faced a setback in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign as they succumbed to a 4-wicket defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the 52nd match of the tournament. This defeat has made their path to qualify for the playoffs even more challenging.
Gujarat Titans slips to ninth spot
In a low-scoring encounter, the Titans batted first and managed to put up a modest total of 147 runs on the board. The RCB bowlers, led by Mohammed Siraj, Yash Dayal and Vijaykumar Vyshak, delivered a commendable performance to restrict the Titans’ batting lineup.
In reply, RCB chased down the target comfortably in just 13.4 overs, with skipper Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli leading the charge with notable contributions. With this defeat, the Titans find themselves languishing at the ninth position in the IPL 2024 points table. They have accumulated eight points so far with a net run rate of -1.320.
Playoffs scenario for GT
Despite the setback, the Titans still cling to a slim mathematical possibility of making it to the playoffs. To keep their hopes alive, they must win all of their remaining three matches and significantly improve their net run rate.
However, the fate of Titans’ playoff aspirations is not solely in their hands. They heavily rely on other teams’ performances to secure a top-four finish. The equation gets more complicated as they need specific results from upcoming matches involving other playoff contenders.

Net Run-Rate crucial
In case multiple teams end up with the same number of points, the Titans will have to rely on their NRR to secure a playoff berth. Currently, RCB also stands at eight points and could pose a threat to the Titans’ playoff aspirations with a superior net run rate.
Next fixtures
The Titans’ next match is against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on May 10 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. They will then face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on May 13 in another crucial encounter before concluding their league campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 16 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
