In the electrifying showdown of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), a contentious ruling by the third umpire sent shockwaves through the stadium. Dinesh Karthik found himself embroiled in the heart of the controversy following his recourse to the Decision Review System (DRS).

Controversial decision by third umpire

In the 15th over, the RCB batter found himself dismissed LBW by the very first delivery he faced, bowled by Avesh Khan. The ball, a full and straight one, swerved at the last moment, striking the batter’s pads. Following some contemplation, Karthik opted for a review.

The replay displayed a significant spike on UltraEdge, yet discerning whether it resulted from the bat contacting the pad or the ball proved challenging. Additionally, the ball seemed in close proximity to the bat. A sense of disbelief washed over RR players Avesh and Riyan Parag upon Karthik being adjudged not out. Expressing his discontent, RR’s Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, approached the umpires for a discussion.

RR emerged victorious against RCB in the IPL 2024 eliminator, triumphing by 4 wickets. They now advance to face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Qualifier 2. After being asked to bat first, RCB posted a competitive total of 172/8, fuelled by Rajat Patidar‘s 34 and Mahipal Lomror‘s blazing 32 off just balls, boasting a strike rate of 188, inclusive of 2 sixes and 2 fours. Ravichandran Ashwin showcased his bowling prowess for RR, conceding a mere 19 runs and claiming 2 wickets in his spell of 4 overs.

In reply, RR got off to a solid start, reaching 46/1 by the end of the powerplay. Although RCB mounted a comeback during the middle overs, it was not sufficient for victory. Yashasvi Jaiswal (45) and Parag (36) anchored RR’s innings effectively. R Ashwin was rightfully awarded the Player of the Match accolade for his outstanding bowling display.

Following RCB’s defeat, Karthik announced his retirement from the IPL. Karthik’s dominance in the IPL made him a standout figure, establishing him as one of the most successful wicketkeeper-batters in the tournament’s history.
