Rohit Sharma gives an update on his captaincy and retirement plans
Rohit Sharma reveals his retirement plans

Rohit Sharma, the standout Indian batter, embarked on his cricketing journey with a debut in 2007. Since then, he has consistently achieved remarkable milestones in both international cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL). His exceptional performances led to his appointment as India’s captain across all three formats in February 2022, under which India saw success in various tours and ICC tournaments. Moreover, he had also steered Mumbai Indians (MI) to victory in five IPL seasons.

However, IPL 2024 saw a change in MI’s leadership, with Hardik Pandya taking over the captaincy reins from Rohit. Concurrently, Rohit also experienced a dip in his form. These occurrences fueled speculation that the Indian skipper might either relinquish his captaincy role or announce retirement following the T20 World Cup 2024. In response to these discussions, Rohit weighed in on the matter and expressed his opinion on it.

Rohit Sharma reveals his future plans for India

During a discussion on the Dubai Eye 103.8 podcast, Rohit described his cricketing journey as wonderful and expressed his intention to continue playing for Team India, dispelling all rumours about his retirement.

“The journey has been wonderful, it has been 17 years, still hope to play a few more years as well & make an impact in World cricket”, Rohit said in the podcast.

Discussing his role as captain, the 37-year-old expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead his team and acknowledged it as a great honor. He also revealed that he had never anticipated being appointed captain of the Indian Team.

“Captaining your country is the biggest honour that you can have, and for me, I have never thought that this would arrive where I’ll be captaining one day. But yeah, people say good things happen to good people,” Rohit stated.

Expanding on the captaincy, Rohit stressed the significance of prioritizing team triumphs over personal milestones and ambitions in tournaments. He articulated his vision for every team member to adopt the same mindset and collaborate towards securing trophies.

“When I took over as an India Captain, I just wanted everyone to drive in one direction, it’s not about personal milestones, personal stats and goals, it is about what all 11 of us can bring to the table & win the trophy”, he concluded.
