T20 World Cup 2024: Reason why there is no reserve day for the second semifinal
T20 World Cup 2024 - 2nd semifinal

The ICC’s decision to forgo a reserve day for the second semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2024 has sparked discussion among fans and pundits alike. While the first semifinal in Trinidad on June 26 has a designated reserve day, the second semifinal scheduled for June 27 in Guyana will not.

Why no reserve day for the second semifinal of T20 World Cup 2024?

This decision stems from logistical constraints. The final of the tournament is set for June 29 in Barbados. Having a reserve day for the second semifinal would risk a scenario where the winning team has less than 24 hours to recover and travel nearly 700 kilometers for the final.

To mitigate the risk of an incomplete match, the second semifinal will have a longer allocated playtime, starting at 10:30 am local time. This provides an additional 250 minutes compared to a standard T20 match, maximizing the chance of a result on the scheduled day.

ICC maintains their stance for the second semifinal

The ICC maintains that this decision offers “fairness” to all four teams. They argue that a reserve day disadvantages the winner by forcing a condensed turnaround before the final.

However, some critics argue that this approach prioritizes scheduling over player well-being. An incomplete second semifinal could see a team progress to the final based on their performance in the earlier group stages, raising questions about the legitimacy of the result.
