West Indies registered a convincing 28-run victory over South Africa in the first T20I of the 6-match series at Sabina Park, Kingston. Chasing a daunting target of 176 set by the Windies, South Africa fell short despite a valiant effort from Reeza Hendricks.

West Indies bat first and post competitive total

Put in to bat first after losing the toss, the Windies opener Johnson Charles departed early. However, his partner Brandon King (79 off 45) took centre stage, smashing six sixes and six fours in a dominant display of power hitting. He found good support from Kyle Mayers (34 off 25) and Roston Chase (32 off 30) as WI built a strong foundation. Despite losing wickets in the later overs, they managed to post a competitive total of 175/8 in their 20 overs.

South Africa’s chase stutters despite Reeza Hendricks heroics

South Africa’s chase began poorly as they lost Quinton de Kock (4) cheaply. However, Reeza Hendricks (87 off 51) played a lone hand, keeping his team’s hopes alive with a brilliant knock that included six fours and six maximums. Unfortunately, the lack of partnerships at the other end proved costly for the Proteas. Matthew Breetzke (19) offered some resistance, but once Hendricks departed, South Africa’s chase crumbled.

The Windies bowlers, led by Matthew Forde (3-27) and Gudakesh Motie (3-25), took wickets at regular intervals, restricting South Africa to 147 all out in 19.5 overs.

Brandon King takes home Player of the Match award
