Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) emphatic victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) on Saturday was fuelled by some brilliant bowling performances, with spinner Varun Chakaravarthy taking centre stage. After the match, Chakaravarthy revealed the strategic plan he employed to dismiss MI opener Rohit Sharma.
Varun Chakaravarthy’s stellar performance
Chakaravarthy finished the match with impressive figures of 2/17 in his four overs, effectively stifling the MI batting attack. His dismissal of Rohit, who walked back to the dugout at a score of 19 after facing 24 deliveries, proved to be a crucial point in the match.

A long-awaited Wicket for Chakaravarthy
Chakaravarthy admitted his delight at finally getting the better of Rohit Sharma, stating, “Yeah, because I had never taken Rohit bhai’s (Sharma) wicket. So celebration was coming. Obviously, there was help from the wicket, and I was able to use it to my advantage.
He further explained the thought process behind his bowling approach to Rohit. “The plan was to make him hit across the line, not through the line. Obviously, there was help from the wicket and I was able to use it to my advantage. Tactically we (referring to himself and Sunil Narine) are similar, but technically we are slightly different.”
KKR reaches the playoffs
The victory over MI has propelled KKR to the IPL 2024 playoffs, making them the first team to achieve the spot. While questions remain around MI’s leadership and team chemistry following their early exit from contention, KKR will be looking to capitalize on their momentum and continue their strong showing in order to clinch their third IPL title.
