Mohammed Siraj’s bowling prowess was on full display from the very outset as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the toss and elected to field against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 encounter on Saturday. Siraj’s impactful spell provided RCB with an ideal start, as he swiftly removed opener Wriddhiman Saha and captain Shubman Gill in quick succession.
Mohammed Siraj’s early brilliance: RCB’s ideal start against GT
Gujarat’s batting innings got off to a rough start, as their openers, Saha and Gill, struggled to contend with the new ball. Despite only managing a solitary run in the opening over-delivered by Swapnil Singh, their difficulties compounded when Saha fell prey to a precise delivery from Siraj. Attempting a cut shot, Saha edged the ball to wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, departing after a mere 1 run off 7 balls. Gill followed suit in the next over from Siraj, where a top edge resulted in his dismissal, caught by Vijaykumar Vyshak. Siraj’s early strikes left GT reeling at 14/2 within the initial four overs, placing significant pressure on the visiting team.

Underwhelming start for Gujarat Titans in powerplay
Gujarat’s woes continued as Cameron Green struck in the final over of the powerplay, dismissing Sai Sudharsan for 6 runs off 14 balls. This further compounded Gujarat’s struggles, leaving them at 19/3 and in dire need of stability in their innings. The lacklustre start to GT’s innings saw them set an unwanted record, registering the lowest powerplay total of 23/3 in IPL 2024. This disappointing performance surpassed Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) previous record of 27/3 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) earlier in the season, underscoring the magnitude of GT’s batting challenges in the initial overs.
