During Match 61 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (May 12), Tushar Deshpande seized the spotlight with a remarkable display of athleticism. In a pivotal moment, he executed a sublime sliding catch to send the formidable Jos Buttler back to the pavilion.
Breakthrough by Simarjeet Singh
RR captain Sanju Samson won the toss and elected to bat first, setting the stage for an intense battle at the Chepauk. The opening duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Buttler provided a solid start, stitching together a promising partnership of 43 runs. However, their resilience was short-lived as Simarjeet Singh claimed the crucial breakthrough by dismissing Jaiswal for 24 runs, providing CSK with a much-needed breakthrough.

Tushar Deshpande’s remarkable catch
Just six runs later, Deshpande showcased his prowess with a remarkable effort, sending Buttler back to the pavilion as well. The English star, batting on 21 runs off 25 balls, opted for an unconventional shot in an attempt to accelerate the scoring rate. Unfortunately, the gamble didn’t pay off as he lost his wicket, altering the dynamics of the game.
On the very first delivery of the ninth over, Simarjeet delivered the ball outside the off stump. Sensing the pressure of the escalating scoring rate, Buttler attempted an audacious lap shot. Nevertheless, he found himself unable to position himself optimally and couldn’t extend as far across as he had intended. Consequently, the ball veered towards the deep backward square leg region. Demonstrating exceptional agility and anticipation, Deshpande swiftly moved to his right, navigating around the bend, before expertly clasping onto the chance with precision and composure.

Key contributions from Dhruv Jurel and Riyan Parag
After the dismissal of Buttler, RR attempted to accelerate their scoring rate on a slow and sluggish Chennai pitch. Nonetheless, they struggled to find their rhythm and managed to reach only 141/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite the challenging conditions, Riyan Parag (47) and Dhruv Jurel (28) displayed some resistance with the bat, smashing a few boundaries that eluded the disciplined Chennai bowlers. Simarjeet emerged as the most successful bowler, claiming 3 wickets, while Deshpande also contributed with 2 crucial dismissals.
