Aiden Markram‘s forgettable moment with the ball overshadowed some of the action during Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) vs Rajasthan Royals (RR) clash in the IPL 2024. Markram, the South African all-rounder, bowled a no-ball so egregious that cricketer-turned-commentator Kevin Pietersen labelled it as “the worst ball ever seen in cricket.”
A look at the worst ball ever seen in cricket
The incident occurred during the 13th over of the Royals run-chase. Markram attempted to deliver a yorker to Shimron Hetmyer. However, the ball completely slipped out of his hand and bounced harmlessly towards the short fine leg area. On-field umpire Nitin Menon immediately called it a no-ball, much to the bewilderment of both Markram and Hetmyer.
The bizarre delivery sparked debate online, with many fans echoing commentator Pietersen’s claim of it being the “worst ball ever” witnessed in professional cricket. Markram, visibly flustered, was granted another delivery, which Hetmyer failed to convert into a six despite the free hit advantage.

Pat Cummins’ spin masterclass takes SRH to IPL 2024 final
SRH captain Pat Cummins masterminded a strategic triumph, leading his team to the IPL final for the first time in six years. Recognizing the minimal dew present at the MA. Chidambaram Stadium, Cummins made a decisive call to deploy his spin bowlers extensively against RR. This shrewd tactic proved instrumental in controlling the game’s tempo and ultimately securing victory for the Sunrisers.
“The boys have been fantastic all season. There’s a great vibe in the squad as you can see and the final was the goal at the start of the season and we made it,” Cummins said in the post-match presentation.
Australian legend Shane Warne holds the record for the most wickets taken by a captain in an IPL season, with 19 scalps for Rajasthan in 2008. This season, Cummins is close to breaking that record, having already taken an impressive 17 wickets for SRH. The Sunrisers skipper has one more opportunity to equal or surpass Warne’s record in the upcoming IPL final.
